Debottlenecking of Chlorine Dioxide Plant

Location:

Lewiston, ID

Client:

Potlatch Corporation

Type:

Integrated Chlorine Dioxide Generation

Design Condition:

Bring existing plant to design capacity

Date:

April 2002

NORAM was invited to assist Potlatch Corporation in diagnosing the causes for severe capacity restrictions in one of two identical integrated chlorine dioxide generators supplied by a third party. One of the generators could not meet its design rate when increasing mill production capacity called for more chlorine dioxide. A performance analysis was undertaken and NORAM subsequently inspected the unit during a scheduled maintenance outage. Mechanical design revisions were recommended and mill staff implemented these during the same outage. On start up, the generator met and exceeded its design rate, exhibited more stable operation and required less chemical makeup.

NORAM is now providing on-going technical advice and training support for the generator operations. The two generators are now producing consistently 20% more chlorine dioxide compared to the commencement of the project.
