First Grid-Scale Iron-Chromium Flow Battery

May 26, 2014

NORAM congratulates EnerVault Corporation on the successful commissioning of their 250 kW / 1 MWh flow battery system in Turlock, California.

Energy storage plays an increasingly pivotal role in the development of the smart grid, and in response to the increasing demands placed on grid stability with the growth of intermittent power supply from renewable energy sources. Redox flow batteries represent a key enabling technology for energy storage on the utility scale.

The EnerVault system in Turlock represents the first flow battery based on the iron-chromium system to be deployed on the grid scale. NORAM provided engineering services and fabricated key balance-of-plant systems for the Turlock facility through a collaborative development agreement with EnerVault.
