Wood Pulp Enters Nanotech Age

A planned $32.4 million demonstration plant at Domtar’s Windsor, Quebec, pulp and paper mill will take extracts from the kraft pulp-manufacturing process and produce one tonne daily of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC).

The one-of-a-kind plant, engineered by NORAM, anticipates a new generation of beneficiated products in the forest industry sector. The unique properties of NCC crystallites, no longer than 200 nm in length, have potential commercial applications in optical films, coatings, bio-plastics, and composite materials.

Domtar Inc., North America’s biggest manufacturer of business papers, has formed a joint venture with FPInnovations, originators of the process. Construction of the demonstration plant will commence in the coming weeks, and is expected to take 20 months to completion.
