NORAM Pioneers Nanocrystalline Cellulose Process

November 23, 2009

NORAM has been selected by FP Innovations of Pointe Claire, QC, to partner in the development of a breakthrough design for manufacturing nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC).

NCC is a fundamental physical building block of wood cellulose. Typical crystallites are 200 nm long and 10 nm wide, and are liberated from pulp fibres in the original crystalline form imparted by nature. The nano-scale imparts unique properties, which differ from those of the bulk material.

After designing a range of plant sizes, NORAM is now completing detailed design of a one tonne per day demonstration plant. This biocompatible, biodegradable material is suitable for a wide range of end-use applications, from aerospace to optics. Plant construction will occur during 2010.
